The MDS philosophy

Montessori Day School provides an open classroom educational setting that encourages children to explore and learn through active involvement with various materials. Each child has the freedom to discover the world of learning at their own pace and to their fullest capacity. Materials are strategically introduced and represent a graduated learning system.

The open classroom setting supports the development of interactive learning across the age groupings. The younger children often emulate the older ones. The outcome for the younger ones is shown through an academic interest and ability beyond their peers in other programs. The older children reinforce and continually reshape their own knowledge while working with the younger children.

Another important benefit of the open classroom for the children is the exposure to several teachers. The teachers work as a team, with each member taking responsibility for each of the graduated levels of the curriculum. This provides a well-rounded, sound instructional environment for the young child. Children are taught individually and in small groups. Lessons are carefully prepared and sequenced to ensure success.

In addition to the Montessori curriculum, we offer Spanish, Music and Art.

What we believe:

We believe that the four most important behaviors for parents and teachers are love, honesty, fairness and consistency.

We believe that the early years between birth and six are the most important years of life for the development of character, personality and learning skills.

We believe that by attending to and complimenting good behavior and positive attitudes, and by ignoring negative behavior, we can increase the positive and decrease the negative.

We believe in listening to what children are saying and changing our plans, if indicated, to meet their needs.

We believe a child earns freedom from becoming responsible and the more responsible they become, the more freedom they should be given.

We believe we must have the confidence, trust and help of each child’s parents in order to meet the child’s needs successfully.

We believe in children!
